Keeping your guests engaged and creating memories
When planning a wedding, private celebration, or corporate function, entertainment is key to keeping your guests engaged and creating memories they’ll talk about for years.
One of the most common questions I get at Red Suit Magic is:
“How long should I hire a magician for my event?”
The answer depends on the type of event, the number of guests, and the atmosphere you want to create. Here’s our expert guide to getting the timing just right.
Weddings 💍
A magician can transform your wedding day—whether during the drinks reception, the wedding breakfast, or as evening guests arrive.
Reception & Photos – Close-up magic is the perfect ice-breaker while the happy couple are busy with photographs. Around 1.5–2 hours is ideal to cover this part of the day.
Wedding Breakfast – A magician moving between tables keeps the energy up between courses. Again, 1.5–2 hours usually works well.
Evening Reception – A great way to kick off the party as evening guests arrive. 1–2 hours of mix-and-mingle magic sets the tone before the dancing begins.
Full Day Wedding Hosting & Magic – Many couples now opt for a magician who can also act as a wedding host and MC, guiding guests through the day with announcements, coordinating speeches, and of course weaving in moments of magic throughout. This can cover the entire day (6–8 hours), ensuring a seamless flow from start to finish.
Best choice: 2–3 hours for part of the day, or a full-day wedding host package for complete entertainment and coordination.
Corporate Events & Private Parties 🥂
At business functions, award ceremonies, and private parties, magic adds an elegant and memorable twist.
Drinks Receptions – Mix-and-mingle magic works brilliantly in short bursts while guests network. 1.5–2 hours is usually perfect.
Dinner Entertainment – Close-up magic between courses keeps guests engaged without interrupting the flow of the evening. Up to 2 hours is recommended.
Stage & After-Dinner Shows – A stand-up performance works best at 30–45 minutes, keeping the audience captivated without overrunning.
Best choice: 1.5–2 hours for close-up, or 30–45 minutes for a stage-style show.
Why the Right Duration Matters
Hiring a magician isn’t about filling time—it’s about creating the perfect balance of entertainment for your event. Too short, and some guests may miss out. Too long, and you risk losing momentum.
That’s why at Red Suit Magic, we tailor every booking to suit:
The size of your guest list
The event format and timings
