The Magic Circle, established in 1905, stands as one of the world's premier societies dedicated to the art of magic. Its inception can be traced back to a gathering of 23 amateur and professional magicians at London's Pinoli's Restaurant. Chaired by Servais Le Roy, this meeting culminated in the formation of a society initially considered to be named the Martin Chapender Club, in memory of a recently deceased performer and founding member. However, the name "Magic Circle" was ultimately chosen, sharing the same initials as Chapender, which was deemed more appropriate.

The society's first official meeting took place at the Green Man public house in Soho, but meetings were later held in a room at St George's Hall in Langham Place, where prominent magicians like David Devant and John Nevil Maskelyne frequently performed. Devant became the first president of The Magic Circle, and in 1906, Maskelyne edited the inaugural issue of The Magic Circular magazine, which has since become a longstanding publication for members.

For much of its history, The Magic Circle was an all-male organization. It wasn't until 1991 that the society voted to admit women, with over 75% of members in favour. However, prior to this official change, Sophie Lloyd, an actress, had already infiltrated the society by disguising herself as a man named Raymond Lloyd. Her deception was eventually uncovered, leading to her expulsion. In recent years, The Magic Circle has sought to rectify this by attempting to locate Lloyd to offer a formal apology and readmission.

In 2023, The Magic Circle welcomed Simon Croft, known professionally as Red Suit Magic, into its esteemed ranks. Croft's innovative approach to magic, characterized by his signature red suit and engaging performances, has earned him recognition within the magic community. His induction into The Magic Circle not only signifies personal achievement but also reflects the society's ongoing commitment to embracing diverse and contemporary talents in the world of magic.

Today, The Magic Circle continues to thrive, boasting a diverse membership that includes some of the most talented magicians from around the globe. The society remains dedicated to promoting and advancing the art of magic, upholding its motto: "Indocilis privata loqui," which translates to "not apt to disclose secrets." With its rich history and evolving membership, The Magic Circle stands as a testament to the enduring allure and mystery of the magical arts.
